Gaúcho is a name given to the men from the Pampas as well as the population from Rio Grande do Sul – southern part of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina.
The rural Gaúchos; known as ‘South American Cowboys’, are a symbol of romanticism because of their free and natural lifestyle. They have a strong cultural identity and for centuries roamed the country’s vast plains, the Pampas, herding cattle, working ranches - essentially bringing together the simplicity of this lifestyle to create a unique culinary experience.
They are instantly recognized by their distinctive clothing; wide flat hats, ponchos, long pleated trousers or loose baggy pants called bombachas, and knee-high leather boots.
There are many stories about Gaúchos; about their lifestyle, their superb horse wrangling skills, and their appreciation of the land. The nomadic life of the Gaúchos eventually ended as settlements grew and they began to work on large company ranches.
Nowadays, Gaúchos still continue to be an integral part of the ranching areas of southern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina.
